'It's Only a Theory'

25-year-old Washington Post blogger Ezra Klein dismisses "as only a theory" the argument that pharmaceutical research in the US will suffer greatly under a nationalized health-care system when the profit motive is impaired.

This seems ironic as the entire underlying theme of the Dems' plan to nationalize health care is based on theory.

It is staggering that there are still people who believe the profit motive can be replaced by government funding and not have that impact innovation.

After all, it's 'just a theory.'

Klein has the better case here. The majority of funding for new drug research - if you consider all the research that is necessary - comes from the government (NIH and NSF).
The United States has the greatest and most productive scientific community in the history of the world, and, yeah, believe it or not, most of it operates outside the for-profit world.

Greed is not the only motivation operative in humans.

"All the research that is necessary?" That's quite a proviso...

Of course, conflating the profit motive solely with greed is quite a stretch, as well.

But then again, maybe we should take the profit out of something like food production too, right?

Conservatives' notion that government would be placed "between you and your doctor" under a public plan is laughable. Insurance companies already place themselves in the middle, rationing health care through referral and prior approvals. That allows them to make billions of dollars of profits. Yet premiums continue to increase by obscene percentages!
