I'm really eager for McCain's response-- campaign finance reform was one of the issues that made him a national political figure. The video announcement has a lot of subtle/not so subtle stuff about how public financing is a broken and corrupt system; which may be an early attempt to undermine McCain's reputation as a reformer.
Campaign finance reform is kind of an albatross around McCain's neck when it comes to conservatives, but it really seems to sell with independents. If McCain makes a statement turning his back on campaign finance reform, he may leave himself open to a big blast of CHANGE rhetoric. If he sticks with it, he may alienate his base, to an unknown degree. The Obama announcement isn't much of a surprise, and I'm betting McCain will follow suit, but I think the actual announcement McCain gives will set an early tone in the campaign.

I would submit that if you are referring to conservatives, McCain has no base with respect to campaign finance reform. It plays well with the MSM and possibly with left-center independents, but conservatives have already written off McCain as a result of McCain-Feingold on 1st amendment grounds. Likewise, his global warming and economics policies (other than tax cuts) are incoherent. Whatever support he has because he has been steadfast on the Iraq war, he fritters away with his goofy positions on waterboarding and Gitmo.
For conservatives, the election comes down to a referendum on Obama and so far it's a no-brainer -- but not because McCain has a solid "base" of conservative support.
