How Should We Describe Obama?

The Philadelphia Inquirer's John Timpane writes:

So how do you refer to Barack Obama? And why?

Do you call him African American? Black?

What about multiethnic? Longer than black, shorter than African American.

I'm not here to call right or wrong; I'm here to ask.

The correct answer to that question would be: Chicago Democrat, through and through.

Any other description is wholly inadequate.

You may be bored of it, but it may well be the most important thing about Obama -- which is probably why not many of his fans wish to talk about it.

If you ever own/operate a business in Cook County -- like I have -- your tune will change so quickly, it will make your head spin...

I could tell you so many personal stories (offline) of how things work in Chicago, you would be embarrassed...
