Here in Texas -- where Hillary Clinton won the popular vote over Barack Obama by about 4%, but won less delegates due to the Texas Democratic Party's bizarre presidential primary system -- the Democratic Party county conventions, where more delegates will be decided, started today.
One common theme from the Democrats' county conventions in the Austin area are 'calls for unity.'
In Travis County, despite the fact that some county delegates were showing up
four hours before the scheduled start time of 10AM, the convention hadn't started
almost three hours later, reports the
Austin American-Statesman's Kate Alexander at the paper's
Postcards from the Lege blog. In
a pre-convention speech, Obama-backing superdelegate Rep. Loyd Doggett called for "unity."
'Celebrate'
the imperfection.
In Hayes County, the
Austin American-Statesman's Chuck Lindell reports, also at the
Statesman's blog
Postcards from the Lege, that the convention began with "a call for unity" between followers of Obama and Clinton, and included a reading of a "laughter-producing list of rules — no spitting, hair pulling or eye gouging."
The Statesman's
Lindell also reports in another post that Rep. Loyd Doggett, after traveling from the Travis County convention, fired up the crowd by saying "the W in President George W. Bush’s name stands for 'Worst ever.'"
In Williamson County,
Melissa Mixon reports that delegates are listening to tunes like
The Who's song,
We Won't Get Fooled Again. I wonder how many Williamson County delegates understand the irony of that?
Ah ... the Texas Democratic Party.
