Sure McCain's a war hawk until you want to interrogate terrorist's at Guantanamo Bay. Sure he's pro-life but don't try and run an advocacy ad 30 to 60 days before an election. Sure he's for tough border security as long as he gets to give amnesty to 20 million illegal aliens after-words. Sure McCain's for appointing strict constructionist judges unless you're a Sam Alito who, according to McCain, wears his conservatism on his sleeve. Did I mention his motives a for "patriotism" and not for "profit?" Whatever that means. Oh, and his temperament. Don't get me started!
If a really think "...McCain is someone a true conservative can support,..." you don't understand Conservatism. Period!
I agree with you. If a true conservative can't support a guy who is with you on 90% of the issues, then I don't understand conservatism.
Probably several reasons why it's not a deal-breaker, based on hierarchy of principles and the fact that it's a binary choice. Voters know McCain better and the brief against him is compelling:
1. First Amendment -- McCain/Feingold 2. Opportunism Iraq War -- gitmo, waterboarding, U.S. rights for terrorists 3. Cluelessness on Economy - he admits it 4. Class Warfare 5. Temperment - especially towards his "friends" like John Cornyn, Thad Cochran There's a more comprehensive discussion at Daily Pundit (click link below)
You're right that it's about hierachy, and that was part of my point: There are three candidates who want to socialize health care (one of whom already has), and one who doesn't.
Government messing with healthcare I believe will have more impact on more people than any of the issues you mentioned. People don't really know Mitt Romney other than his campaign rhetoric. But it's hard to find a politician who has changed positions on more issues than Romney. McCain has done some things I disagree with because in politics, some compromises must be made. But in Romney's case, he's done 180s on nearly everything. It would be hard to find a position he took in 1994 that he still holds today.
I'd add to the Brief against McCain the amnesty deal, which like the two Dems, McCain is for but most GOPers are against.
Neither candidate is 100% -- or, really, 90%. (In fact, McCain's ACU rating for 2006 was a dismal 65%--about the same as some conservative Ds.) The question is just what are the dealbreakers for each voter. In the end, my guess is that McCain will barely prevail based on his perceived strength on the GWOT, combined with his willingness to criticize what he believes were mistakes in the way the GWOT has been prosecuted, esp. in Iraq. But it'll be close, and it won't be decided this Tuesday. For the first time in my voting lifetime, the Texas Primary will matter in deciding the nominees of both parties.
"For the first time in my voting lifetime, the Texas Primary will matter in deciding the nominees of both parties."
From your mouth to the ears of GOP voters in California and Georgia.
Did the Guiliani endorsement make you a little sweeter on McCain? It made me a little more wary, but I'm still of the general liberal opinion that 4 or 8 years with McCain wouldn't be all bad-- he's a smart, experienced politician who seems to have a good moral grounding.
But since, like I said, I'm part of the liberal opinion on McCain, there's probably not much useful advice I can give conservatives when it comes to who to vote for.
My problem with McCain is that I can't know what his core beliefs and principles are. His political behavior is all over the map and is not explicable on the basis of conservative person trying to get things done in DC. He not only didn't vote for Bush's tax cuts- he loudly and publicly denounced the tax cuts, echoing democrat class warfare rhetoric. My best guess is that it really matters to him that lefty media types say nice things about him.
But yeah, I'll vote for McCain over either dem. |
