Tom:
I tell you, reading Andrew Sullivan (and then reacting to it) is a fools game. You just make yourself look silly responding to this goofball.
I don't think so. Very few things are as much fun as laughing at fools like Sullivan...
Tom,
While I tend to agree with David Rogers, I appreciate your doing the work most of us refuse to do -- reading Andy's ramblings. But be careful, the Pat Robertson endorsement is driving the progressives over the edge. Their poor little brains just can't handle the cognitive dissonance. Don't get pulled under.
"He [and his conspiracy-theory crowd have] enriched [themselves] at the expense of millions of gullible [people] who did not understand that this man's sole principle is his own power and wealth. It doesn't surprise me that he sees eye to eye with [Ron Paul]. They are very similar characters."
And your analogy comes to a screeching halt, well before you get to the good stuff. What, exactly, makes you think that Mr. Jones and Dr. Paul are cynics cashing in on America's anti-war and anti-government sentiment for their own sleazy gain? The slightest glance at their records should be enough to convince you that these two are acting out of honest conviction. You may disagree with those convictions; frankly, I consider the "9/11 Truth" crowd to be idiots for crediting the Junior Bush regime with far more competence than it has otherwise displayed. But do not accuse them of being charlatans and phonies. To do so is to expose yourself as utterly incapable of understanding your opponents. (Which, as the War on Evil has taught us, means you are utterly incapable of defeating them. So I guess I'll see you at Dr. Paul's inauguration. LOL.)
The whole point of the post was to satirize Sullivan.
I do not think Ron Paul is a charletan, but I do think he panders to the 9/11 conspiracy crowd, which, for someone like me who voted for Paul in 1988, is a non-ending source of aggravation and disgust. However, I am confident in calling Alex Jones a charletan; he is one through and through -- if there ever was one, he is it. Before Bush, Jones was pushing the 'black helicopter' b.s. during the Clinton Administration. And I'll bet he'll be on to something else during the next administration... No, I think I understand Jones and his crowd just well enough to laugh at them....
I'm pretty sure you're confusing the words "charlatan" and "nutjob." A charlatan doesn't really believe the goofy crap he spouts. A nutjob does. And as far as I can tell, at least, Jones is the latter. (Sidebar: while I consider myself a rabid Paulian, I'll gladly throw down the penalty flag for his appearance on Jones' show. There are ways to get your message out without being in the same room as a conspiracy nut. Except that the conspiracy nuts tend to flock to Paul's rallies, so... maybe there isn't. Heh.)
I guess what irks me is your wholesale Mad Libbing of Sullivan's post. The general thrust of it works, but it feels like that one part should have been snipped. It's just nitpicking on my part, really. (Of course, part of the fun of blogging is that it isn't exposed to copy editors before it's published. So missteps like this are probably inevitable.)
I can understand why it might bug you, but as I said, the intended target was Sullivan.
Did I mention I think him a fool? Anyway, as someone who believes in a lot of what Ron Paul says (save for foreign policy, and the gold standard/Fed stuff), the Alex Jones appearances and the pandering toward 9/11 conspiracy theorists grates especially badly... Why can't libertarians get their heads out of the asses when they run for office?
Sullivan apparently has plumped for Obama. I would say solely because BHO openly supports gay marriage.
So AS now employs his considerable verbal and rhetorical skills to strafe the opposition with absolutely insane analyses of their character and motivations. Maureen Dowd has some serious competition, here. |
