Bush's Address to the Nation

Here's the transcript of President Bush's speech.

Here is the Democratic Party response, given by Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI).

Glenn Reynolds put it well, I thought:

So I watched the speech. It was okay -- an average performance for Bush, not especially good or bad -- but I'm not sure it really added much, post-Petraeus. It will, however, probably pull a response from MoveOn, which based on this week's experience can only help the Bush Administration. ... Okay, I watched the Democratic response from Sen. Jack Reed, which seemed calculated to make Bush's speech seem lively by comparison. Not much there, either. I'm pretty sure political oratory is at a historical low point.

What a bunch of bull. I feel insulted. Progress? Thank God Iraq's Sunni insurgents (extremists?) decided to turn against the foreign insurgents (more extreme). THIS is the reason for this supposed progress in Iraq. It had NOTHING to do with the Surge or with General Patraeus' plans, and the General pretty much admitted that. 4,000 American and 600,000 lraqi lives later, Bush is giving us more of the same. http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=485

Despite your rhetoric, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but this war has not killed 600,000 Iraqis civilians.

That figure is out-an-out nonsense.

Translation:

1. The war is lost.
2. Even if it's not lost, there's no progress.
3. Even if there is progress, it's supposed progress because the Iraqis are standing up against the foreign insurgents.
4. Even if it is real progress and the future looks brighter for Iraqis, Bush lied and no WMD and 600,000 Iraqis dead (I thought it was higher, but as long as we're making up stuff, 600,000 will work -- a million died in the Iran/Iraq war.)
5. Future goal-post-shifting talking points:
a. Democrats are responsible for any real progress in Iraq.
b. You can trust Democrats with national security because they know the way to victory over terrorism is to show weakness and division.
