Occam's razor when applied to journalism teaches to look for laziness before you look for bias. The presidency is the big office, one guy, he affects all 50 states, and everybody who knows anything has a strong opinion.
It looks to me like they went for the headline that would get the most national attention with the least effort.
You're probably right. The only biased outlet in the whole media is Fox News.
Congress Dives Below Bush is a catchy headline, gets the essence of the thing, and would certainly have attracted more attention than what was actually chosen.
The headline that would get the most national attention would have stated both the White House and Congress are at record low approval.
This also has the added advantage of being a simple, non partisan, recitation of the facts. The decision to omit one half of the news, that unfavorable to Congress, puts paid to Occam's Razor.
Occam's Leftist Razor says: If it can be used to bash Bush/Republicans/Conservatives, do it.
It's just not possible to trust the headlines anymore. I've read way too many AP articles where the headline says one thing and the article says something else.
AP and Reuters are destined to self destruct. Generically speaking...
a couple of things to note about journalism in the MSM. first, editors edit and, sometimes, write the stories.
second, headline writers are specialists in conveying a POV with few words, and independent of the story. there's almost nothing either honest or accurate in headlines quite apart from the stories they top.
I'm familiar, as you are, with how the wire services work: Often they don't write the headline. Someone on the customer end does.
But that strengthens my point about general media bias. The headline writers at the papers, Yahoo, AOL, and other reproducers of AP and Reuters content almost always exacerbate the bias with a headline.
Granting the what you say about editors and headline writers, if that were the only problem, wouldn't rational people take note of the consumer's disaffectation with their product and do something about it?
One excuse I often hear about the media is that they are only interested in money. Aside from the fact that there is nothing wrong with concern for making a business profitable, the fact is that newspapers, news magazines, etc., are losing money, and it seems to make no difference to their behavior. It is rather like the reaction of our elected officials, who get into office and stop listening to their constituents. Contrary to business, however, the profit motive seems to rule this behavior.
I am wondering why this reportage would surprise anyone. But more importantly I am wondering where the 29% who still like Bush or the 23% who think the Congress credible.
