Jules Crittenden notes that media coverage of Memorial Day weekend activities has been
little more than a body count.
I’m beginning to get the impression there is nothing more important to the Associated Press in its Iraq reportage than the number of “American soldiers killed in this unpopular war.”
It seemed that way as well to anyone who watched network television on Sunday; the lead of seemingly every broadcast was a US body count.
Memorial Day is of course to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. But it's important to remember why they made that sacrifice as well. As Crittenden mentions, Don Surber discusses a brutal and
disturbing al-Qaeda torture manual that was found recently that has received virtually no media coverage. Karl Rove didn't write it, so it's not news.
One hopes that at least today, on Memorial Day, the news types would remind us that ultimately we're the good guys, and the ones who are fighting and have fought for us have done so for good reason.
