Well, I was part of that event and Kid Oakland was wearing a fedora that had a card stuck in the hatband which read 'Blog'.
That makes Kid official.
I think Kid Oakland's closest relation is Just Kidding.

Hmmmm.
Breaking news from Kid Oakland Sounds like a good title for an album.
Instapundit links here, suggesting Pelosi's threat would be a petulant and frivolous use of the courts. I disagree. If a signing statement changes the intent of the bill, and is immune to any legislative check, it seems like a very appropriate matter for the court. The extent of executive power has shifted and is an open question right now, one that seems to beg a constitutional ruling.
Fwiw, I was not contacted for that piece by the Hill. If they had contacted me I would have asked them to:
a) use my real name in place of, or in addition to, my dailykos screen name which goes back five years now to a time when there were just 2000 of us on dailykos discussing politics and the news. b) I would have asked that they provide the context of that quote and the blog entry they pulled it from. Speaker Pelosi mentioned using the courts at the tail end of a response to a question about signing statements, not as a start point for an extended discussion. If asked, I would have told Kaplan and Schur that they would have to ask the speaker if they wanted to get a full acount of her views. I don't think pulling one sentence out of my post did the Speaker justice. At any rate Tom, I agree that using a "user name" off a community blog for a mainstream news piece is silly, if not a bit problmatic. Of course, it's not a problem unique to one ideological point of view. Glenn Reynolds is "Instapundit" after all. We took these names at the very beginning of "blogging" as a trend. Fwiw, I've been open about my real name since I was Front Pager at dailykos. Speaking of which, anyone interested in reading the full context bloggers conference call with the Speaker can read it here: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/4/24/1685/36784 If done right, and this one was, I think on the record conference calls between politicians and bloggers are an excellent way of bringing blogs closer to the actual politics of D.C.
Thanks for taking the time to write and for the courteous tone you maintained throughout your comment. As you know, courtesy seems to be in short supply these days in many quarters.
As for the main point, I don't necessarily have a problem with people using screen names in their posts -- though I think it's sometimes overdone, but that's just my own personal preference. Where I have some problems with it is when someone breaking a story or doing reporting uses a screen name. I just think it hurts the story's credibility. As for "Instapundit," most everybody knows who he is -- I mean all of his posts have his name beneath them. I think it's pretty transparent who he is. But your point is well-taken.
Thanks for the reasonable and reasoned tone...not something one often gets from a "kossak"...I for one appreciate it.

It's self-evident that 'Kid Oakland' is a site not to be taken seriously.
Unlike 'RightWing Nut House.' Or 'Protein Wisdom.' Or 'The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler.' Man, the shit you spew is almost as funky as the shit you eat.
You know, I love anonymous posters -- or the ones using a screen name -- who throw their insults around like they're tough guys.
While the posters at Anti-Idiotarian Rotweiler don't publish under their own names, Jeff Goldstein and Rick Moran both do, and to the best of my knowledge, none of them breaks news stories using screen names. Other than that, you really nailed me. Putz.
Sorry to break the news to the "Constitutional scholars", but just as the Constitutional remedy for ending the war is defunding it, the Constitutional remedy for a President who is not executing the laws is impeachment.
Of course, both of those require actual courage and integrity so it's natural that Demorats won't do either. |
