Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) has a piece at The Huffington Post called, "Standing with Harry Reid," where Kerry writes that "the [Republicans are] going after my friend and Majority Leader Harry Reid" who is being "unfairly attacked" for his comments on Iraq.
... the worst part is, the whole attack is based on a completely out-of-context quote. This is what Harry Reid really said, "And as long as we follow the President's path in Iraq, the war is lost. But there is still a chance to change course - and we must change course." Any questions?
Well, yes, Sen. Kerry, I can think of one.
But let's watch the video of Sen. Reid's comments, and see how it jibes with what you say Sen. Reid is being criticized for:
Hey whaddya know ... Sen. Kerry got it completely wrong. Go ahead, compare what Kerry points to and what the video shows you.
Notice the difference?
So I guess the "whole attack is based on a completely out-of-context quote" statement is inaccurate.
You do realize that in Kerry's world you are now guilty of swiftboating him. Swiftboating is defined by JFKerry and the Left as confronting Kerry (or any Democrat) with ...
1. his own prior, inconsistent statement (usually documented with audio/video or an official transcript such as the Congressional Record),
2. challenging him on some outlandish claim and forcing him to backtrack or waffle, or
3. reminding Kerry that he still hasn't released all his military records as he promised he would a year ago.
.
now that we have an operational definition of "swiftboating" it is ready to be entered in the OED and other sources of modern english. this definition is far better than the previous one: "i don't like what they said."
As a former Kerry backer, I'm putting my fingers in my ears and humming loudly. It's not like the guy's a political contender anymore, he's become just another permanent incumbent, so it's not like it's necessary for me to further punish myself.
Everytime something like this happens though, I flashback to watching the election results Tuesday night with a friend who was born and raised Bostonian-Catholic-liberal. When the results for Massachusetts came in, it was a narrow margin of victory, which I couldn't understand because as near as I could tell, 90% of Massachusetts hated Bush with a passion. "Why's the margin so small in his own state?" I innocently asked. She gave me a short answer that has haunted me to this day:
"Because we know him."
At least I didn't support Dean. And now I'm going back to humming loudly.
