I'm sorry--I must have mis-read this. Did CBS fire someone over language because of pressure from "Hymietown" Jackson and "Kill the White Interlopers" Sharpton?
CBS--defending free speech since Dan Rather said "fake but accurate." "Tiffany" network? More cubic zirconia than diamond, I'd say.
I can't spend a lot of time sticking up for Al and Jesse, especially in light of the Duke situation. They owe those boys a public apology.
That being said I am pleased that the overwhelming public pressure placed on the advertisers and networks has resulted in Imus being forced from the air. Maybe some of you guys should go back and re-read the constitution. I belive it says something like "the government shall make no laws abridging freedom of speech." This action was long overdue. Nobody has the constitutional right to say the kinds of things that Imus and his toadies regularly say on the air. I also like the fact that you chose to take paragraph 8 from this article to try to imply that it was solely jesse and al who brought this about. How about paragraph 3 - "There has been much discussion of the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly young women of color trying to make their way in this society," CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves said in announcing the decision. "That consideration has weighed most heavily on our minds as we made our decision." My only hope is that Limbaugh and Savage and Boortz and the others who peddle hatred come under the same pressure. If you believe in unfettered freedom of speech then where do you draw the line?
Even if he was trying to be funny, what Imus said was beyond stupid.
There's no defending what he said -- but the hypocrisy, the sanctimony of this reaction, is what really gets me. And while most people think what Imus said was stupid, in fact, he does have the right to say it, just as the people who are angry about what he said have the right to their say. But the inconsistency of guys like Jackson and Sharpton is galling. Do you think for a minute that Sharpton and Jackson are going to go after the rappers who perpetuate this kind of stuff? Of course they won't. And just for the record, the excerpt I quoted was one of the two paragraphs that constituted the story when I linked to it.
has every right to say what he said. He does not have any right to a public forum to say the things he says. He is now facing the consequences of his actions. His advertisers have every right to pull their advertising from his programs and people who are offended have every right to scream bloody murder.
Too much of our public discourse has reverted to a schoolyard mentality. There are bullies, toadies and the masses who just want to get on with their lives. A bully like Imus singles out someone and says something nasty, the toadies gather around and laugh at the person and the remainder of the people try to ignore it and hope that they will not be next. sooner or later all bullies get their just deserts.
What he said was ridiculous; the reaction more so.
And for what it's worth, I don't think Imus is a bully. The bullies are the folks who want someone fired for saying something stupid. Also for what it;s worth, I predict coming witch hunts...
As AP articles evolve over time I can understand that paragraph 2 was the one describing the Al and Jesse show. Boy those guys suck!
How long will it be before someone gets fired for insulting Mohammed?
I'm still stunned by the speed of all this. The ink from the '2 weeks is not severe enough' editorials of this morning is still on my hands.
My Hillary Clinton e-mail voicing support for the women insulted is barely a day old. Usually this type of semi-scandal has a much longer cooking time.
You're right. The speed with which this happened is quite something...
