'It was Deplorable'

After seeing video clips of captured British sailors and Royal Marines in Iraq, British Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt commented, "It was deplorable..."

One would guess that the health secretary was talking about the hostage taking. Well, no she wasn't.

Here is her full quote:

"It was deplorable that the woman hostage should be shown smoking. This sends completely the wrong message to our young people."

Valuable info, Madame Health Minister. We'll get back to you when we need more important insight.

Well I hope that next time the Health Minister is captured in the most hostile, insane nation in the world that she can show us how to stay pure and viceless under those circumstances.

When I saw the clip, I assumed the Iranians were trying to portray Western culture at its most bizarre to the Muslim world: women/mothers on the front line in the military, smoking in public.

Obviously I was in error. That specific clip was for the nanny state Western societies.

I had taken the video as proof that the hostages were being well-treated... I mean, I'm not a smoker, but if I was, I'd consider myself pretty lucky (relatively speaking of course) to get a cigarette under those circumstances.

Incidentally, Article 26, paragraph 3 of the "Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War" guarantees the right to use tobacco.

Perhaps the Health Minister should read up on international law.
