Sullivan Urges His Readers to Subvert 'American Idol'

Andrew Sullivan continues to 'fight the power.' He writes: (emphasis added)

... I urge everyone to vote for Sanjaya in American Idol. It's very, very important to subvert this compulsive but far too self-important show.

While I know about American Idol, I have never watched the show, and have no idea who 'Sanjaya' is -- so maybe I'm out of line here, but is it really "very, very important to subvert this compulsive but far too self-important show"?

Maybe I'm wrong. After all, who knows more about "compulsive but far too self-important" things than Andrew Sullivan?

Is it time again to ask...

Never watched it. Never will. But I have seen Simon on OReilly. I wonder if this is a Simon thing...

He's joking -- he doesn't think it's very, very important -- and I know because everybody has already made this joke. Everybody. 'Best Week Ever' covered this last week. 'Vote for the Worst' has been in the internet gossip cycle for at least a month (ugh... I just had to admit to reading gossip blogs...). In internet news-cycle terms, Sullivan had to push aside Egyptian mummies to get to this story.

I changed my choice to 'fraud', because not only is it not news, it's not even new non-news.

This Sanjaya guy apparently keeps winning on Idol because he's the favorite among teen girls. I guess that's the same reason Mr. Sullivan likes him so much.

Aw, crap. I was doing that "Vote for the Worst" thing because it was a guilty little pleasure, and American Idol is a fraud anyway.

But if Andrew Sullivan is endorsing it now, I might have to rethink my participation.

Sanjaya must be stopped! This just shows how subversive and disloyal Andrew Sullivan has become. Our national security and the preservation our way of life depends on defeating Sanjaya.

Andrew Sullivan has gone from irreverent to irrelevant in just a couple of years.
American Idol has the staying power to not only absorb the Sanjaya "campaign" but to profit from it. American capitalistic culture lives!

I really doubt that anyone at American Idol is particulerly self-important. The producers probably know it is just light entertainment. This is more evidence that poor Sullivan is experiencing very weird ideation these days. He should get out more.
