Oh, I agree. Some of the left have gotten seriously stupid. And there are a few key figures driving the train. There is, ironically, a qualitative difference though, in some case.
The right still wants to silence alternative opinion. They want to silence "all" alternative opinion, but they have discovered that its often more profitable and effective to lie about the alternative opinion, and outright silence it. If your base is so ignorant of reality that they don't have a clue and most of the fence sitters are there because they are "equally" ignorant of the details, making up lots of BS details, misrepresenting facts and outright lying about the opposition is "very" effective. The problem is, Universities have been listening to a mix of loonies from the left, some of which now insist on equating "acceptable" racism with "diversity". This works like this: If its true, its not racist, and I, as an expert, say that Black people tend to be late getting places, so therefor its not racist to say you, "shouldn't expect a black person to show up on time." The other loonies they are listening to are the flip side of this stupidity. And at most universities, you won't find liberals disrupting conservatives, or conservatives disrupting liberals. Dissent of any kind is not allowed, because dissent shows a "lack of respect for other people's points of view", and the new liberal movement actually fracking believes, and sadly, many conservatives would agree, as long as their own offensive speech can be excluded on religious grounds, that people have a right to "not be offended by other people's opinions". What was once the hill upon which great philosophers talked has become a bunch of tents, with signs hanging on the sides, and armed guards to make sure only the people that "share" the opinions being discussed in the tent are allowed to enter it. When this defensive barrier breaks down, who evers "rally" gets "disrupted" cries loudly about how someone else dared to say something that didn't support the rallies agenda. And of course, the fact that you must shout to be heard at all when you are one of maybe 10 people who disagree with the rallies goals, out of hundreds, is presented of "proof" of how uncooth and inappropriate showing up and "disrupting" things was of you. Mind you, I have no doubt that the kinds of people showing up to disrupt things are "most of the time" the most lunatic of which ever political position is opposite that of the rally. It takes a certain kind of insane obsession and delusional thinking to garner the courage needed to sneak past the carefully set up defenses that where intended to keep people with dissenting opinions out in the first place. And, I can also guarantee you that if you look, you will find liberals complaining about conservatives showing up to "offend them" as well. Universities need to get their heads out of their asses, stop listening to the most anti-free speech morons on both sides and simply state, flat out, and in no uncertain terms, that progress is made by letting people shout at each other, like it was before these stupid speech codes started to appear, which have been presented by conservatives in some cases as well, not by giving every group some priviledged little corner to babble at each other, and ignore everyone else's opinions. Instead, they continue to cave into fools on "both" sides that insist their opinions must be "protected" by creating even more barriers to shared opinions, which includes groups complaining that someone dared to ignore the, "We don't want you here!", signs on the way in the door. |
