It very much appears to me that AJ and Hugo are trying to goad Bush into some counterproductive, precipitous action in the war on terror. Hopefully, they overestimate the amount of 'white guilt' and leftist self - loathing loose in our land. Hitler and Churchill did a bit of this in WWII. I take this as another sign that Bush's efforts are in the right direction.
Mangled Cat: Had the GOP or Admin done so their response would have been the story, not Chavez's intemperate remarks.
No, better to allow the country to parse it for themselves. The Dems stuck a finger into the polling winds overnight and sent an impervious Rangel out to catch any blowback from the far left.
I'll second cottus on this.
Plus, not only is a Bush response the response of the U.S. itself -- which is why Bolton's priceless-yet-tempered comments were right on the mark -- but any heat should come from the President's party. I understand Rick Santorum has already stepped up to the plate earlier today.
Given Rangel's willingness to slam Bush mercilessly in the past, his tone reminded me of a scene in Animal House "He can't do that to our pledges. Only we can do that to our pledges."
To: Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (sf.nancy@mail.house.gov)
From: M----- M------, Californian Re: Your comments on Hugo Chavez Ms. Pelosi, There is a Reuters article published today in which you are quoted calling the president of Venezuela, "an everyday thug." The article can be read here: http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&ct=us/0-1&fp=45126dda06d3f183&ei=8uASRcS2HpvSHNn1xJIE&url=http%3A//today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx%3Ftype%3DpoliticsNews%26storyID%3D2006-09-21T164252Z_01_N21334844_RTRUKOC_0_US-VENEZUELA-USA-SPAT.xml%26WTmodLoc%3DNewsHome-C3-politicsNews-2&cid=1109667213 I understand that President Chavez' comments at the United Nations were in poor taste according to some. If that was the case, Ms. Pelosi, why didn't you simply say that the comments were in poor taste? Instead, by calling him "an everyday thug," you have bolstered the misperception that Hugo Chavez is somehow an enemy of the United States, when he is not. Hugo Chavez is the shrewd president of one of our main petroleum trading partners, who has won democratic elections and brought a visible reform to Venezuela after decades of incompetent and corrupt leadership. He has donated cooking and heating oil to low-income Americans and sent oil at discount rates to third world nations in the region. Chavez IS however an enemy of the murderous policies of the United States federal government in Latin America, and justifiably so. Are you aware Ms. Pelosi that the United States federal government which you represent was involved in the illegal coup d'etat in Venezuela in April of 2002? Are you aware, Ms. Pelosi, that the United States' actions in Latin American aimed at subverting mostly nationalist and democratic movements have led to the deaths of millions of Latin Americans, from 1890 to the present? (Ref: http://www2.truman.edu/~marc/resources/interventions.html) I'm obliged to conclude, Ms. Pelosi, that while you fancy yourself a modern day champion of progressive politics, you're nothing but an everyday shill for American militarism and empire.
Yes, that Hugo Chavez is a wonderful guy ... who is our friend too!
Bush would be, like, so much cooler if he gave people cooking oil like that great guy Chavez, but, like, he's too busy building an "empire" and feeding his "militarist" tendencies ... with the help of Rep. Pelosi...
Chavez would be, like, so much cooler if he just did whatever Wall St. wanted like that great guy Bush, but, like, he's too busy teaching people to read and giving them healthcare and feeding his "popularist" tendencies ... with the help of the U.N.
Chavez is "too busy teaching people to read and giving them healthcare"?
Yes, that must be it. The damage you 'progressives' are doing to the Democratic Party is one of the saddest things about today's political landscape.
charles rangle is still a fraud. read his exact rant. he starts by equating chavez and bush as equals.
i believe is exact quote was " while bush and chavez enjoy personal attacks on each other they can do what they want politically but you don't come in my district"..... he's continues to be what he has always been a race baiting cheap shot artist. the only reason nacy pelosi spoke up is because she heard all the echoes of previous democrat speeches on the floor and she's in damage control. if there wasn't an election coming she would not have said a word. they all agree with chavez and they themselves have said the same in many speeches for the last 3-4 years.....
HA ha. I love that some cannot get over Bush long enough to see that Hugo Chavez is a buffoonish thug. Call him " Commandandito" - the mini-me to Castro. Hey, you who make a fetish of "speaking truth to power" - try that in Venezuela, you'll end up in a ditch somewhere.
P.S. - It should be a tip-off when a civilian leader makes a point of wearing a full military uniform (beret, ribbons, etc) on a regular basis. (oh and don't give me that about Bush on the aircraft carrier, did he come out wearing a full military uniform with cap and ribbons, et al? If he did, would you be screaming about it (rightly so)? |
