I think I saw in the Sun-Times at least one Alderman who argued that they weren't a laughingstock. I figure that makes him the dumbest of a pretty dumb bunch.
He really hasn't - this was just him using them in a different way. Notice when he needed to, he got his veto upheld. Heh. There is much to dislike, and much to admire in him...
I don't think he's lost control of the City Council ... this is the first veto of his 17-year term.
While things today are different than in his father's days, he still has a pretty good handle on things in Chicago. I suspect he's being challenged more now because of the scandals swirling around his administration. Just to give you one measure of his political strength, look at the presidential election returns in Cook County since his election for the years 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004, and compare those results with those of the 1964 presidential election, which was a blowout. In the 1964 landslide, LBJ beat Goldwater by 22.5% nationally, and won Cook County by 26.4%. In 1992, Gov. Bill Clinton won nationally by about 5.5 %, and won Cook County by 30%; in 1996, President Clinton won nationally by about 8.5%, and won Cook County by 40%; in 2000 Vice President Gore essentially tied for the national vote, and won Cook County by 40%; in 2004, Sen. Kerry lost by about 2 .5%, and won Cook County by 41%. All the presidential elections between 1992 and 2004 were far closer nationally than the 1964 election, yet the margins of victory for the Dems in Cook County from 1992-2004 were all larger than that in 1964. While these results aren't all due to Daley, I think a lot of the credit goes to him... Who else in the country produces results like that for his party?
Meanwhile:
Daley is apparently in favor of security cameras on public streets and appeared with local L.A. politicians as they rolled out such cameras in Hollywood Even worse, he appeared at the March10 illegal immigration march. One of the organizers of that march is an official with a Mexican political party. Details at the link.
Look out Wal-Mart and other Big Boxes/ Daley playing you too. Go ahead with the expansion and see what happens.....It's not "friendly" territory
"When did Daley loose control of the city council and the machine?" Never.
"facing his toughest re-election fight from a credible black challenger" Conspiracy theory: he made his council pass a stupid law for him to veto, so he could sound strong and principled. Anyway, who is this "credible black challenger"? Jesse Jackson Jr.? Son of a poverty pimp who shakes down the whites for personal gains with his boycotts and protests. Not a chance. Daley is pretty safe, he can have the job for as long as he wants.
I went to grad school in Chicago back in the seventies when hizzonor da mare daley was boss. Govt there was a lot like medieval england and I am sure it remains largeley the same today. The mayor is king with significant powers, but the alderman are like the dukes, each with their own power base. They do challenge the mayor for time to time, esp when they do not think they are getting their fair share of the takings. Offices like States Attorney for Cook County and Cook County Assessor also figure in the complex interplay of power and influence. It is an extraordinary spectical -- american democracy at its most sordid and interesting.
Joe Moore is my alderman (sigh). I called him yesterday and spoke with him personally.
He is planning on introducing a new "living wage" ordinance but this time expanding it beyond "big box" retailers and down to all retailers that have 1000 employees (1000 employees anywhere, not just in Chicago). I asked him if he was planning on including the workers at Chicago's community Colleges, many of whom make less than Moore's living wage. I'm thinking this might expose him for the disengenous SIEU shill he really is. He stated that he'd have to think about it. More details and updates at my 'blog. http://globalcop.us Ed, Chicago
Will the "living wage" be paid to those who do canvassing for Democrats, and those who are paid to picket Walmart?
I have never voted for Daley, should Jessie Jr. run I will do so. The worst thing that could happen is for that cipher to get elected. In many ways Daley is a very good mayor and in some not so great. He is not anti-business, like alot of D's and most of the city council. Joe Moore is a moron of the first order.
Daley is the only Democrat I have ever voted for. You can't imagine how bad things were in the Dinkins era.
Thank god for Daley, the city is clean, crime is down, business environment is good. Sure, he rakes a little off the top. But it's a small price to pay for a city that works. Where you aren't accosted by violent homeless. Where the Loop is immaculately clean. Which people who raise the tax base want to live in. |
