President Obama: 'I'm a Blue Dog Democrat'

This excerpt from a piece by the New York Times' Matt Bai caught my eye: (emphasis added)

The body of Mr. Obama's writing and experiences before he became a presidential candidate would suggest that he is instinctively pragmatic, typical of an emerging generation that sees all political dogma -- be it '60s liberalism or '80s conservatism -- as anachronistic. Privately, Mr. Obama has described himself, at times, as essentially a Blue Dog Democrat, referring to the shrinking caucus of fiscally conservative members of the party.

The reason the president describes himself this way in private is because if he said it publicly, people would laugh at him -- much in the way most will when they read this excerpt.

Update: Ed Morrissey notes the ever-changing nature of the president's political self-description:

Barack Obama must be having one hell of an identity crisis. He campaigned for office as a post-partisan moderate, but has governed as a big government tax-and-spender. When talking to the New Democrat Coalition in March 2009 -- just after his Keynesian plan to spend $800 billion for economic stimulus -- Obama told them he was a New Democrat. Five weeks ago, Obama told liberal bloggers that he is really a progressive.

That young man needs serious help. Really. Does he even know what "Blue Dog Democrat" means? As for "The body of Mr. Obama's writing" other than his autobiographies, where are the opinion papers Mr. Obama wrote before being President? There are none. He was afraid of being "Borked" and has published nothing. He is an empty shirt. What experience? A community organizer? That's a polite name for a mob leader.

A *Mob Leader*? You mean like Nixon and his plumbers? Or maybe Reagan and his Ollie North army that got this country labeled as a terrorist country by the World Court? Or do you mean like w/cheney who are war criminals as defined by US laws when they took office, by the Geneva conventions, and by the UN bylaws?

To try to associate someone who is actually trying to help a depressed community with criminals shows your total lack of understanding of what community organizers do, and what Christians, and most religions are tasked to do for mankind.

You may think your post was cute, or witty, but it shows you to be mean, vicious, bigoted, and ignorant. Maybe you should discover some of the values that every religion teaches, and you'll become a better person.

You obviously don't know the origins of that term. It was not a candidate or politician who was a yellow dog democrat. it was a voter who would "vote for a yellow dog before they would vote for any Republican". That was shortly after the civil war because Lincoln was a Republican.

After the civil rights act, and the voting rights act in the 60s people became yellow dog republicans, but they just don't claim the title out loud. Strom Thurman lead the charge of thousands of southerner leaving the democratic party to become a once hate republican. They knew where they hate and bigotry was welcome. Remember, it was called Nixon's "southern strategy".

The big joke here is that Bai describes blue dogs as "fiscally conservative." What a joke, the blue dogs refuse to do the one and best thing that will help reduce the deficit, raise taxes on the wealthy. I'm reminded of Howard Dean's comment in 2004 that he was a metrosexual... just before admitting that he didn't know what the word meant. (Presumably he just liked the sound of it.)

Similarly, President Obama probably likes the idea of calling himself a Blue Dog Democrat... as long as he doesn't have to do anything to justify the title.

#24: "Raise taxes on the wealthy" as a way to reduce the deficit? How many wealthy Americans are there, do you think, compared to the size of the deficit? Raise taxes to 100%, and it still wouldn't make much of a dent in the deficit. (There's also the point that if you did so, rich people would elect to take their money elsewhere.)

The concept of "Blue Dog" Democrat is a media fabrication to manipulate the proles. In actual practice the "Blue Dog" Democrats vote the straightline party ticket as consistently as their Marxist fellows in that party.

The real 'splitters' are the RINOs, who in fact do vote with Democrats quite frequently and give all Republicans a bad name as they validate the smear "they are all alike".
