Thanks Tom -- beautiful and perfect to see today. Man, what a guy.

I have not cried since I was a little boy, but watching this brave man brought tears to my eyes and choked me up like I never would have believed. What a brave man Mark Stephan is, and bravo to him. He is a living testament to the fact that human grit and determination can accomplish miracles. Mark Stephan is a true hero in my eyes.
Wow, just wow!! Now that man is worthy of being a hero and inspiration to everyone! Thank you for bringing this incredible story of the human spirit and grit that Mark Stephan possesses. How refreshing this is...I am so sick of the drone of Tiger's transgressions and the tripe coming from Hollywood. This man is the embodiment of 98% of America!!!
people on Medicaid wont be able to hire their own therapist... god bless him.
I have a friend who is dealing with the same type of situation. Although, as far as I know, he had no "degenerative bone marrow disease" as a child, he, too, was in a bicycle accident involving hitting a storm drain at just the wrong angle. He, too, found himself paralyzed instantly. Since that time he has pulled himself out of paralysis, and is now able to kayak with minimal or no aid.
In a world of "bad news," thank God for people like my friend, Matt Coiro, and Mark Stephan ... and, I should add, the late Christopher Reeve.
what a great story.
And what a shame that we had to try to watch it while peering through NBC's excessive banners. They couldn't shut down teh banners?
What a great story--I hope Mark keeps getting better and better.
And to correct something NBC said: the Willis Tower (nee Sears Tower) is 110 stories, not 103. My guess is that they stop the climb at the 103rd floor since that is where the observation deck is.
I am moved by this gentleman's grit and determination. His courage is very inspiring. He's what I call real American Spirit.
Mark was a "dorm mate" and friend from our freshman year in college. I am proud of you Steph.
How remarkable. I believe that God put me in the specific place to see this on the show Thursday morning. My nephew, who is now 42-years-old, had an accident a little over 3 years ago which left him paralyzed from the waist down. He has encountered several problems, some including several sores, and I do believe he has given up hope to ever walk again, possibly even to continue living. I have searched and searched trying to find help for him. Is there any way that someone could give me some info on who to contact so that he might be able to get help? There is no one around our area who seems to have any ideas for him, other than to just sit in the wheelchair or lay in bed. He has always been ambitious. He grew up watching his Grandpa, my Dad, face battles because of his prosthesis. My Dad lost his leg in WWII. My Dad is still alive and has been such a trooper. He has never given up. I guess I thought my nephew would never give up, either, because he has always been so proud of my Dad. I thought Dad would be some sort of encouragement for him. But with uncertainty of where to turn, I guess I can understand my nephews feelings of dispair. If anyone could point me in the direction of where my nephew might go seeking help to someday walk again as Mark has, I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you. Mark, you are truly an inspiration to many. God Bless You.

Denise,
i can only suggest you contact the Rehabilition Institute of Chicago. They have a "second Look" program for people with acute spinal cord injuries. you can look this up on their website ric.org i wish your newphew the best of luck
Mark is such an inspiration to my Uncle Vern Francis! A similar accident in August 2009 was so devastating to Vern. Mark continues to inspire Vern to what he CAN do! Thanks so much Mark. Merry Christmas! Ruth Franklin
